Other Information: Call for donation and drop off information. The Computers for Schools program was started by the Detwiler Foundation. It seeks to raise the quality and quantity of computer technology in K-12 classrooms throughout Minnesota, with a goal of placing more than 18,500 useable desktop and laptop multimedia c omputers in schools by July 1, 2000. The computers are placed in schools based on priority of need.
In Minnesota, Computers for Schools has been operated by the Minnesota Department of Children, Families & Learning since August 1997. It was launched in support of Governor Arne Carlson, as part of his administration's educational reforms program, and funding from the Minnesota Legislature. To date, Computers For Schools has placed 20,580 computers in 118 districts and an additional 217 schools. Machines are refurbished at the rate of 225 computers per week with the help of inmates from two correctional institutions.
